Grading of Cultured Pearls

We have set our goal as high in determining the quality of pearls and pearl necklace strands by using the following evaluation system:

AAA: Compared to the diamond grade of flawless. Unfortunately, we only see this quality in older Japanese pearls that were produced prior to the 1980’s. They are perfect rounds, no blemishes, with thick nacre which produces silvery or pinkish green, blue hues in overtone, a white or cream body color.

If you have inherited old Japanese pearls or strands of pearl necklaces from someone, take good care of them: clean them, restring them and sometimes repolish them to restore the original beauty.

They are your treasures that will last for a long, long time with your care.

AA: Compared to the diamond grade of VVS1 and VVS2. Each pearl is perfectly

round; for example, 9.0 mm. x 9.0 mm. The nacre will still be thick with a beautiful hue and overtone. Very minor blemishes.

A: Nacre is still important to be in this grade. Shape should be round or slightly off round, for example, 9.0 mm. x 9.2 mm.

We do not sell pearls below A.

BQ: Baroque shape in Oyster pearls - unlike Biwa Pearls. Mother of Pearl Beads have been planted in the oysters. These pearls are

not perfect round and are less expensive than the grades listed above.

This grading system has been developed based on 35 years of Mitsuko’s experience, working passionately with beautiful pearls. She remembers her first discovery of a pearl as a child, many, many years ago, growing up in Japan.
