Shinjyu Jewelry Company, located in Sacramento, California, is owned and operated by Mitsuko Hashimoto, designer and personal
jeweler, and her husband Walter Johnson, Graduate Gemologist and retired educator.
SANTA CRUZ, CALIFORNIA
During 1972 Mitsuko and Walter established Jewelry by Mitsuko in a community of artisan studios and store fronts known
as The Old Sash Mill is Santa Cruz. There, with great elan, Mitsuko, during her waking life, made real the jewelry that crowded
her dream life.
As time progressed and Mitsuko began to design fine jewelry, we felt the need to a precise identification of precious
stones. So, In 1976, Walter applied to the Gemological Institute of America, located at that time in Santa Monica. He studied
Diamond and Colored Gemstone identification and appraisal and received his diploma as Graduate Gemologist in Residence.
AMHERST AND NORTHAMPTON, MASSACHUSETTS
Mitsuko and Walter then moved to Amherst, Massachusetts where Walter had been working toward his Doctorate in Education
at the University of Massachusetts, Amherst.
There Mitsuko continued to design jewelry and to improve her technical skills as a jeweler. She opened Jewelry by Mitsuko
in Northampton, an interesting town close to Amherst. In her studio, she learned to incorporate the influences of East Coast
jewelry technique and design sensibility into her West Coast point of view as well as her Japanese sensibilities.

BACK TO SUNNY CALIFORNIA
Walter finally successfully defended his dissertation, much to Mitsuko's delight, and they left the snow country, returning
to sunny California, right back where they started from. Jewelry by Mitsuko opened in Sacramento in 1982.
SHINJYU JEWELRY COMPANY, a NEW NAME
When the Hyatt Regancy was completed in 1988, they opened in downtown Sacramento with a new name - Shinjyu Jewelry Company.
There Mitsuko has been most productive and there we have made many good friends during these past twenty years.
MITSUKO'S STUDIO
Now, to begin the New Year of 2010, we have closed our retail showroom. Mitsuko and I will work from the studio, away
from the demands of a retail store.
At her studio, Mitsuko will have more uninterrupted time to created the special jewelry designs that she has always dreamed
of bringing to life. She will continue to create jewelry by Special Order for family, friends and clients.
